CSI 5122: Software Usability

This page contains general information about the course CSI 5122 (Fall 2023), taught by Professor Tim Lethbridge.

My objectives in teaching this course are 1) to raise your awareness of user experience and usability as key software engineering qualities; 2) to teach you up-to-date knowledge regarding usability engineering and human-computer interaction; 3) to teach you skills in UI design and evaluation; and 4) to help graduate students to learn to be be better researchers by emphasizing research techniques and paper writing.

Some students will have taken a user interface design course (such as SEG3125) before taking this course, but not all students will have had the opportunity to do this. If you have not, don't worry. I will review key undergrad knowledge in the first part of course. I will also ask you to do some extra reading, but not an excessive amount of this.

Course notes

Please click here for the course notes. As we work our way through the course, I may update these slightly, so they should only be considered final just before each week's lecture. We will cover them in the order shown.

The 2021 version of the course will be in person, but I will attempt to broadcast online too for those who are sick or have other legitimate reasons for absence. Registered students will find the Zoom link on Brightspace, and also recordings of the classes, for review. Attendance is required, but if you have a legitimate reason for absence, please explain to the prof; he will be understanding but expect you to watch any video if the class is successfully recorded.

The official syllabus is accessible via SimpleSyllabus. There is a link to that in Teams and in Brightspace.

Assignments will be submitted via Brightspace. Details of the assignments are in the course notes, and will also be explained in the classes

Note that since so much critical material is taught during the first weeks, I will not be letting students into the course who register late. If you are on the waiting list, please come to the first classes anyway.
